A daybed conceived by New York based artist Minjae Kim, this piece is a study in contrast, weight and repose. A single block of Douglas fir, stained, lacquered and carved by hand into a sculptural bolster, rests against a raised platform, its raw end grain left visible like the cross-section of a felled trunk.
The cushion is upholstered in fabric by Metaphores, a soft grey surface interrupted by a central band of textured bouclé, a quiet gesture that draws the eye along the length of the piece. The tension between the massive, almost primitive bolster and the precision of the platform is deliberate, an object caught between furniture and sculpture.
Like all of Minjae Kim's work, the piece carries the mark of the hand. No two are identical. Each is made by hand in the artist's New York studio, in dialogue with Garcé Dimofski's approach to material and craft.
