More sculpture than seat, this rocking chair by New York based artist Minjae Kim is carved by hand from solid pine, its silhouette rising into an irregular, crown-like backrest that recalls something between a totem and a folk figure. The grain of the wood is left to speak, its warm tones interrupted by quiet strokes of blue acrylic, a gesture of colour that catches the eye without breaking the material honesty of the piece.
Every edge carries the mark of the hand. The stepped back, the rounded finial, the softly hollowed seat, none of it is machine-made, and none of it is meant to be perfect. The chair rests on curved runners, giving it a gentle motion and the presence of an object to be looked at as much as used.
